Showing practical knowledge without a formal qualification

If you learned a skill at home, on the job or from family, here is what an online assessment can show about it, and what it cannot.

Written for: People with practical skills learned outside a classroom: cooks, tailors, electricians, mechanics, carers, shopkeepers and many more.

Your knowledge counts, even without a certificate

Many people learn their skills at home, in a family business or on the job. GyaniX does not ask for a CV, a degree or an employer before you take an assessment. You only need an account, so that your results carry your name.

What an online assessment can and cannot show

An online assessment checks knowledge: what you understand about a skill and how you would apply it in a situation described in the question. It cannot see your hands, your tools or your finished work. So a good result shows that you know the material; it does not prove that you can do the work safely and well. Both matter, and they are best shown together.

Begin in an everyday area

Free Basic Assessments cover everyday areas such as home cooking, food hygiene, tailoring and stitching, home repairs, home electrical safety, caregiving, gardening, budgeting and smartphone use. Each takes about 5 to 10 minutes, costs nothing, and explains every answer afterwards, so you learn something even from the questions you miss.

Full assessments for trades and service work

Several full assessments are written for trades and service roles, such as domestic electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, two-wheeler service and mobile phone repair. Where a task depends on a procedure or a reference table, the question gives you the procedure or table and asks you to apply it. That way you are tested on understanding and judgement, not on memorising one employer's rulebook.

Some work, such as electrical installation, may legally need a licence or certificate from an authorised body where you live. A GyaniX certificate is not a licence and cannot replace one.

Build a fuller picture

Use your GyaniX results as one piece of evidence alongside others that show your work directly:

  • Photographs or short descriptions of work you have done, with dates.
  • A reference from a customer, employer or the person who trained you.
  • Any course, apprenticeship or trade certificate you hold.
  • Your GyaniX report, shared through a verification link, showing the knowledge behind your work.

Use the report to fill gaps

People who learn on the job often know the everyday tasks very well and have gaps in the less common ones, or in the reasons behind a rule. The skill-by-skill results and the development plan show where those gaps are, so you can close them before someone else finds them.
